Summary: It is better to avoid commonly encountered window
problems by purchasing windows having low e glass with heat film.
Window glasses with soft coat low e glass along with least U-value
will minimize noise, heat loss and condensation. To avoid replacing
an entire sash you can buy vinyl windows which can be reglazed.
The biggest source of gain and loss of heat in a home is usually the
doors and windows. Windows that have high performance and are of
high quality can save you money by extending the life of your home.
It makes a lot of sense to buy the best affordable windows in case
you are constructing a new home. You can cut down on accessories
such as vanity faucets and carpeting that are too easy to change.
General Complaints
One of the general complaints people have about windows is why do
seals fail. This leads to the window becoming hazy or foggy.Aluminum spacers are used in the older type insulated windows so
that dead air space can be created between the pieces of glass.
Though aluminum is resistant to corrosion, it conducts both heat and
cold. The edge temperatures of the inner piece of glass in the
windows with old style aluminum spacers are lowered significantly in
cold climate. Insulated glass spacing technology has however
progressed since then. Spacer materials used in this new edge
technology are different and they do not easily conduct cold or
heat. You should check what kinds of spacers are used in your
windows.
The inner surfaces amid the two glass pieces fog up due to seals
failure. The seal are located between the insulated glass pieces.
Such failures are quite common and have a long history though in
recent times there has been considerable improvement with progress
in seal technology. Whatever may be the type of vinyl windows you
may have, seal failure is still possible. It is better to enquire
about the warranty for failed glass seals from the salespeople.
Problems with Condensation
Condensation is the collection of water vapor on the cool surface.
Beginning as a light fog, the fog increases, until it forms beads of
water, which then run down the pane of the glass. This condensation
results when the temperature of the glass falls below or equals dew
point of the air which is in contact with the glass. With increase
in humidity within the house the dew point usually rises up. This
leads to the expansion of air holding more water vapor.
The condensation can actually be minimized. You should purchase
glass with the least U-value. Low U-value glass offers increased
resistance to loss or gain of heat. The glass should also have the
top warm edge spacing technology that is obtainable. The lowest
U-values are usually found with those windows with invisible Low-E
films or a soft coat Low-E glass. The inner piece of glass of these
windows remains warm as much as is possible. For instance, consider
72 degrees inside the house and 0 degrees outside with a 15 mph
wind. The inner temperature of a single glass pane will record 26
degrees. It will be 35 degrees for a regular pane glass. In the case
of hard coat insulated Low-E glass, it will be 49 degrees. It will
be 62 degrees in the case of soft coat insulated Low-E glass which
is actually a comfortable temperature. Condensation is less likely
to form when the inner piece of glass in our home is warmer. Cold
drafts or convection currents are created with warmer inner glass
surfaces.
It is found that with new windows there can be condensation. Ever
wondered why? This is because air infiltration is severely cut down
with new windows. Warm moist air and cold dry air easily mix in your
house when you install new windows inside your house. Both dew point
and indoor humidity levels show the inclination to rise up when new
windows are installed. As a result the surfaces of the new glasses
are seen to have condensation where these new glasses are in fact
warmer than earlier. What you can do is to lower the overall
humidity level in your house to lessen condensation on your vinyl
windows.
Custom Glass
The best window glass that you can possibly get these days is the
ones that have suspended between the glass panes an invisible heat
film. These have several advantages over the regular insulated
glass.
To begin with, these are more comfy. Intense heat and solar
radiation are not permitted from entering your home in summer by the
heat film. The air temperature in the house is warmer during the
cold winter months. This is because the cold convection currents are
minimized. You will experience warmth with a warmer glass surface.
You must take note of this. Highest indoor glass temperatures are
produced by heat film glass.
Noise can effectively be stopped by heat film glass. Noise levels
are drastically reduced by 56 percent of the noise level with
standard insulating glass in the case of some glass systems. I
myself have had such experiences. If all the air leaks from around
the window frame are plugged then the noise level is drastically
reduced.
You can really customize the hat film that some window companies
supply. The solar control and insulation levels are different with
different heat films. You can have one kind of heat film for all the
north facing windows while another type can be chosen for all south
facing windows. You can get details of such an option from your
window company.
Glass Can Break
The way in which you have your got the glass installation done in
your vinyl window sash is vital. It takes some effort to replace the
broken glass in the case of aluminum, steel or old wood windows.
However, it can be different in the case of vinyl windows. The
entire sash needs to be replaced in the case of some of the vinyl
windows when the glass breaks. But it could be that the colors
themselves have changed in vinyl. This may be because of long years
of being exposed to sunlight or it may also be due to the materials
being of poor quality. The color of the new replacement sash may
also not match with your current frame.
You should think of avoiding the purchase of new sash by purchasing
vinyl windows which can be re-glazed. You will have much more
flexibility with them.
Warranties
Warranties for lifetime are there which you can check out. This is
usually available in companies which have been carrying out business
from 15 to 20 years or so. It may also be that a lifetime warranty
is also offered by startup companies too. What you need to do is to
find a company with a good track record.
